Hydroponic systems fosters rapid growth, stronger yields, and superior quality of your plants. When a plant is grown in soil, its roots are perpetually searching for the necessary nutrition to support the plant. If a plant’s root system is exposed directly to water and nutrition, the plant does not have to exert any energy in sustaining itself. The energy the roots would have expended, acquiring food, and water can be redirected into the plant’s maturation. As a result, leaf growth flourishes, as does the blooming of fruits and flowers.
Currently we are relaying too much on the fresh food supply from outside of the island. If we all would start growing own food, we could easily change that. We still will have to go shopping but growing anything is better than nothing! So it doesn't matter how big is the space that you have - there are different sizes of growing system, suitable for different needs. It's up to you how big or how small space you want to use for it.
Vertical hydroponics is easier than you think. All you need is clean water, plant nutrients, and don't forget to adjust the pH of the water. The best pH for most hydroponic plants is neutral to mildly acidic pH (5.5-6.5). This will ensure the plants are able to uptake the nutrients required for the optimal growth.
One study found that hydroponic used 90% less water compared to conventional soil-based agriculture. This is due to the fact that the hydroponic systems recycle and reuse water, minimizing wastage and ensuring that every drop is utilized efficiently.

In 2018 we were expanding our presence in the social media and locally, and were educating about the benefits of growing own food using hydroponics and helping to understand how it works.

By the end of year 2019 the first in Jersey urban vertical hydroponic farm from Hydro Garden was up and running, operating from small rented premisses down at Havre Des Pas. We were growing mainly green basil and few other crops. At the time we were also experimenting for the first time with growing micro greens and micro herbs, to start supplying them to the local restaurants in Jersey. After successful trials with it, everything was getting ready to start the commercial supply from April 2020.
In February 2020 Seedy Sunday event at La Rocquier School was the first ever expo we had a pleasure to be part of. And as we were getting ready to lunch the fresh supply of microgreens for local kitchens - the pandemic came... and everything was forced to close. Now we were only relaying on personal customers orders, as no one was allowed to leave home for longer than two hours. Because micro greens are classified as super-food, we were essential workers delivering micro greens to local homes. It wasn't much at the time, but anything was better than nothing. The farm was slowly expanding it size and production capabilities.
Early 2021 brought few upgrades. Purchase of an electric delivery bicycle allowed us to reach more customers and avoid the traffic. Registered with SumUp to be able to take card payments on the go. Over 20 new varieties of micro greens and herbs were added to the available choice. Sowing 100 trays a week! We've teamed up with fetch.je. But unfortunately the premisses that were used for the farm had to become vacant... and need to admit that by expanding the size of production, we had too much product staying behind. Keep saying we, but it actually was done just by one person. I'm Peter and my full-time job was Mon-Sat till 1pm - so I had a lot of time to do the Hydro Garden. But I had to change my job and didn't had time anymore to commit to it again. So it went dormant from June 2021
until beginning of 2024. This time growing micro greens only in small amounts for personal use, and for any customers if ordered in advance. For now focusing more on production of edible flowers and purple basil mainly, but not only. Bringing you the newest, great range of different sizes vertical hydroponic systems, grow light, micro greens grow trays and more!
